Compressible Turbulence: Multi-fractal Scaling in the Transition to the Dissipative Regime

چکیده

Multi-fractal scaling in the transition to the dissipative regime for compressible turbulence is considered. The multi-fractal power law scaling behavior breaks down for very small length scales thanks to viscous effects. However, the effect of compressibility is found to extend the single-scaling multi-fractal regime further into the dissipative range. This result appears to be consistent with the physical fact that vortices stretch stronger in a compressible fluid hence postponing viscous intervention. ∗Permanent Address: University of Central Florida, Orlando, FL 32816-1364

A compressible mixture model with phase transition

We introduce a new thermodynamically consistent diffuse interface model of Allen–Cahn/Navier–Stokes type for multi-component flows with phase transitions and chemical reactions. For the introduced diffuse interface model, we investigate physically admissible sharp interface limits by matched asymptotic techniques. We consider two scaling regimes, i.e. a non-dissipative and a dissipative regime,...

Scaling Relations for Turbulence in Multiphase Interstellar Medium

We simulate the dynamics of phase transition in radiatively cooling interstellar gas in three dimensions with a high order hydrodynamic method. We have previously shown (Kritsuk & Norman 2002a) in simulations with non-equilibrium initial conditions that thermal instability induces supersonic turbulence as a by-product of the phase transition which leads to formation of multiphase medium. We rel...

Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Subsonic Compressible Flow through Rectangular Microchannel

In this study, turbulent compressible gas flow in a rectangular micro-channel is numerically investigated. The gas flow assumed to be in the subsonic regime up to Mach number about 0.7. Five low and high Reynolds number RANS turbulence models are used for modeling the turbulent flow. Two types of mesh are generated depending on the employed turbulence model. The computations are performed for R...

Scaling Relations of Compressible Mhd Turbulence

We study scaling relations of compressible strongly magnetized turbulence. We find a good correspondence of our results with the Fleck (1996) model of compressible hydrodynamic turbulence. In particular, we find that the density-weighted velocity, i.e. u ≡ ρv, proposed in Kritsuk et al. (2007) obeys the Kolmogorov scaling, i.e. Eu(k) ∼ k −5/3 for the high Mach number turbulence. Similarly, we f...

Scaling Relations for Turbulence in the Multiphase Interstellar Medium

We employ a generalization of the She & Lévêque model to study velocity scaling relations based on our simulations of thermal instability–induced turbulence. Being a by-product of the interstellar phase transition, such multiphase turbulence tends to be more intermittent than compressible isothermal turbulence. Due to radiative cooling, which promotes nonlinear instabilities in supersonic flows...
